How to Create a Virtual Machine

 

The following steps will show you how to create a virtual machine in VMware vCenter Server using the Create New Virtual Machine wizard.

  1. Log in to vCenter Server system.
  2. Go to Home > Inventory > VMs and Templates.
  3. Expand inventory. Right-click your folder on the inventory and select New Virtual Machine.
  4. When prompted by Create New Virtual Machine wizard, do the following:
    1. Create and enter a name for the new virtual machine. [Name (of virtual machine)]
    2. Select inventory location. (Inventory Location)
    3. Expand and select your ESXi host. (Host/Cluster)
    4. Select your datastore. (Datastore)
    5. Select version for virtual machine or keep the default. (Virtual Machine Version)
    6. Select your guest operating system. (Guest Operating System)
    7. Choose your version. (Version)
    8. Select 1 for the number of virtual processors. (Number of virtual processors)
    9. To make sure that you are configuring 384MB of memory and not GB, select MB from the drop-down menu and type 384 in the space provided.
    10. Select 1 for the number of NICs. (# of NICS do you want to connect)
    11. Select Production from drop-down menu. (NIC 1 Network)
    12. Keep the default. (NIC 1 Adapter)
    13. Leave selected. (Connect at Power On)
    14. Keep the default. (SCSI Controller)
    15. Keep the default. (Disk)
    16. Type 2GB for disk size.
    17. Select the check box. Allocate and commit space on demand (Thin Provisioning)
    18. Leave unselected. (Support clustering features such as Fault Tolerance)
    19. Keep the default Location.
    20. Keep the default Virtual Device Node.
    21. Leave unselected. (Mode-Independent)
    22. Select Edit the virtual machine settings before completion check box and click Continue. The Virtual Machine Properties dialog box appears.
  5. In Hardware list, select New CD/DVD (adding).
  6. Select Datastore ISO file.
  7. Click Browse and go to the repository for your ISO images.
  8. Click Open.
  9. Select ISO image that matches up to the guest operating system you selected during virtual machine creation and click OK.
  10. In Virtual Machines Properties dialog box, select the Connect at power on check box.
  11. Click Finish to save changes.
