How to Remove the vmnic from the Standard Virtual Switch
The following steps will show you how to remove your Production standard virtual switch so that it can be used with a distributed virtual switch.
- Go to Home > Inventory > Hosts and Clusters.
- Select your ESXi host from the inventory and click the Configuration tab.
- Click the Networking link.
- Find the virtual switch that contains the Production virtual machine port group. Click the Properties link next to that virtual switch.
- Click the Network Adapters tab and select the vmnic in the network adapters list.
- Click Remove.
- Click yes to confirm the removal.
- Click Close to dismiss the vSwitch Properties dialog box.
How to Create the Distributed Virtual Switch for the Virtual Machine Network
The following steps will show you how to create a distributed virtual switch named Production for virtual machine networking.
- Go to Home > Inventory > Networking.
- Expand the inventory view.
- Right-click the Training datacenter and select New vNetwork Distributed Switch.
- Do the following when the Create vNetwork Distributed Switch wizard appears:
- Select vNetwork Distributed Switch Version 4.1.0. (Distributed Switch Version)
- Type vDS-01. (Name)
- Type 2. (Number of dvUplink Ports)
- Click Add now. (When do you want to add hosts and their physical adapters to the new vNetwork distributed switch?)
- Expand the inventory for both ESXi hosts and select the vmnic for the Production network. Click the View details link to view more information about the vmnic. (Host/Physical Adapters)
- Deselect the check box. (Automatically create a default port group)
- Click Finish. (Ready to Complete)
How to Create a Distributed Virtual Switch Port Group
The following steps will show you how to create a distributed port group.
- Go to Home > Inventory > Networking.
- Right click vDS01 in the inventory and select New Port Group.
- Do the following when the Create Distributed Virtual Port Group wizard appears:
- Type Production-<file_name> for the port group name. Leave all other fields at their default value and click Next. (Name)
- Click Finish. (Ready to Complete)
- Verify that the port group was created in the inventory.
- Identify use cases for creating multiple port groups to access the same vmnic.
- Go to Host > Inventory > Hosts and Clusters.
- Select your ESXi host from the inventory and click the Configuration tab.
- Click the Networking link.
- Click the vNetwork Distributed Switch button.
- Click the information icon to the right of the vDS-01 to show the distributed virtual switch configuration details.
- In the vDS-01-DVUplinks pane, expand the dvUplink1 to show the vmnic in use for vDS-01.
- Find the name of your port group and click the information icon to the right of the port group name. This operation shoes details about port group configuration.
How to Migrate Virtual Machines to a Distributed Switch Port Group
The following steps will show you how to migrate your virtual machines to the distributed virtual switch.
- Go to Home > Inventory > Networking.
- Right-click the distributed virtual switch named vDS-01 and select the Migrate Virtual Machine Networking.
- Do the following in the Migrate Virtual Machine Networking dialog box:
- Select Production. (Source Network)
- Select Production-<name> (vDS-01). Click Show Virtual Machines. (Destination Network)
- Select the check box next to teach virtual machine that you want and click OK.
- Monitor the task in the Recent Tasks pane. Wait for task to complete.
- In the inventory, select your port group and click the Virtual Machines tab.
- Verify that the virtual machines were migrated to the destination network.
How to Verify that the Virtual Machine has proper access to the Production Network
The following steps will show you how to verify that your virtual machine can access the Web over the Production network.
- In the Virtual Machines tab of the Production-<name> port group, right-click one of the virtual machines that you own and select Open Console.
- Log in to the guest operating system as Admin.
- In Internet Explorer, go to http://www.vmware.com.
- Verify that you can access the Web site.
- Exit Internet Explorer.
- Close virtual machine’s console.
