New Technical Changes in Exchange 2007
No more STM Database file
Exchange 2007 only uses EDB Database now. STM database from previous
version of Exchange is gone. Microsoft has redesigned the new Exchange
2007 EDB format to include the benefits of streaming STM database.
No more Routing Groups
Exchange 2007 now uses Active Directory site and services while
eliminating the concept of routing group. Routing groups were used in
Exchange 2003 to differentiate group of well connected Exchange
Servers. Exchange 2007 Hub Transport role uses Active Directory Sites
and Services to identify well connected servers and doesn't require IT
Administrator intervention.
No more Bridge-head Server
Exchange 2007 replaces Bridge-head Server from previous version of
Exchange with Hub Transport role in Exchange 2007. Hub Transport acts
as a hub for mail flow within a site.
No more Front-end Server
Exchange 2007 replaces Front-end Server from previous version of
Exchange with Client Access role(CAS) in Exchange 2007. Client Access
role still serves the same function as Exchange 2000/2003 Front-end
Server.
Routing Groups, Exchange 2007 and Exchange 2003 co-existence
When Exchange 2007 is introduced to existing Exchange 2003
organization, it creates a temporary routing connector to communicate
with existing Exchange 2003 infrastructure. You will see this Routing
Group at the top when you open Exchange 2003 System Manager.
No more Administrative Groups
Exchange 2007 eliminates Administrative Groups which was a great
administrative model for Exchange 2000/2003. Exchange 2007 now uses
Active Directory security groups to delegate permissions.
Administrative Groups, Exchange 2007 and Exchange 2003 co-existence
As with Routing Groups, Exchange 2007 creates a temporary Administrative Group to co-exist in Exchange 2003 organization.
No more Recipient Update Service (RUS)
Recipient Update Service (RUS) has been removed in Exchange 2007. RUS
was used in Exchange 2000/2003 to stamp email address of newly created
users in Active Directory. RUS was troublesome for IT administrators
as it was never understood why many time the user's email address is
not stamped. Exchange 2007's Exchange Management Console now takes
care of stamping the email address.
